My Winter Uniform

I’ve always liked the idea of a style uniform – simple fashion maths that always works – but as something of a sartorial magpie and vintage collector I would find it challenging to embrace a capsule wardrobe, chic and effortless though it may be! That said, I think I’ve developed something of a signature look that evolves with the seasons. My go-to combination of retro dress + opaque tights + boots is still my favoured, seasonless option, but in the depths of Winter sometimes a little more layering and added woollens prove necessary.

In recent weeks I’ve been turning to a simple but effective Winter uniform of oversized knitwear and pleated midi skirts, which you already know I’m a fan of – can’t say I’m not predictable! First up, can we take a moment for this Boden beauty of a mint green and grey knit? It’s my dream Springlike pastel hue, but its ultra-soft cashmere, cuddly cut and extra long sleeves make it ideal for this time of year. It’s in the sale now too! The velvet version of my now-staple pleated midi skirt is from M&S – it was out of stock almost as soon as I saw it. Luckily my patience (and daily website visits) paid off and there was just one left in my size. Clearly it was meant to be! I adore velvet and it just goes with everything; a piece I will definitely be wearing for years to come.

My second outfit includes another M&S skirt – I must admit I picked up this metallic sibling of the velvet version when it went out of stock but I think both pieces have earned their place in my wardrobe! Metallics seem scary but are easily dressed down for day with a cable knit and pair of ankle boots. The pale pink jumper is the fuzziest I own; it’s a vintage Johnstons of Elgin number and was a bargain £3 from a charity shop in Leith. Every time I slip on this combination I can’t help but twirl – I dare you to resist in this Winter uniform!
