As well as the gorgeous Autumn textures I was applauding in my most recent outfit post, in joint first place in my favourite things about seasonal dressing (trust me, it’s a substantial list!) is Autumn’s colour palette. And we haven’t even mentioned prints yet! From sumptuous burgundy to mustard yellow, emerald green to rich russet, there’s something about the depth and variety of autumnal hues I can never seem to resist.
Perhaps it’s because I’m peely-wally, but I find Autumn’s darker shades far more flattering than the lighter Summer palette. And while I’m learning to embrace white and there’s certainly no stopping my love of Spring pastels, I seem to turn to Autumn’s jewel colours again and again. I find my greatest inspirations in the rhythm of the seasons and it’s no different in the style stakes. I can’t resist coordinating with my surroundings, I’ll admit that much, but it’s more than that – when nature’s current colour palette looks this good it’s hard to resist. There’s something that feels strangely invigorating about nature’s own changing clothing that translates to my wardrobe each season.
It was said seasonal hues that had me at hello when I saw this Autumn-inspired dress in good old M&S a few weeks ago. Its colour palette reflected the changing leaves to such an extent I simply couldn’t resist. I’ve sung the praises of the company again and again and make no apologies – the latest new season drops are filled with beautiful seasonal colours, cuts and textures, so expect to be seeing plenty more in future posts. I adore the ’70s-inspired style, oversized pussy bow and bell sleeves of this frock, while the graphic floral print gives a contemporary twist to a retro style.
I’ve been wearing my new dress with heeled ankle boots and my staple Topshop pleather biker jacket (which is getting a little tatty – any recommendations for a new one?!) but think it will look equally chic layered with a chunky cardigan, tailored coat – matching in with one of the pattern’s colours of course – and knee boots when the temperature drops further… and it certainly feels as though Winter is on its way today! Here’s hoping for a few more golden Autumn days before then.
