Cath Kidston Grove Rose Dress

A new Cath Kidston dress and new (to me) vintage floral crown.

Yesterday was gloriously sunny in Edinburgh, while today it’s grey and dreary with a distinct breeze in the air. Such sartorially unpredictable Summer weather calls for a wardrobe of simple but stylish dresses that are perfect come rain or shine – and do the hard work for you. In my mind, a shirt dress is the ideal in-between number that looks as good with tights and ankle boots as it does with bare legs, sandals and a floppy hat, while a bold, summery print (I’m feeding my floral addiction) works well against a dark background for extra versatility points.

I’ve been coveting Cath Kidston’s gorgeously feminine patterned frocks since they became a regular fixture in the brand’s seasonal collections, as they strike just the right balance between girly, vintage-style prints and modern, wearable cuts. I’ve had my eye on the Grove Rose Dress all season (but its £70 pricetag was a bit much for my postgrad budget to justify) and luckily for me, our recent visit to London coincided with Cath’s epic Summer sale and I snapped it up quicker than you can say ‘how many florals does one wardrobe need?!’.

I love the retro-inspired print and relaxed fit, making it a perfect everyday option that can be dressed up or down. Its first outing was – rather appropriately perhaps – Midsummer’s Day; it was another grey day here so I plumped for the tights-and-boots option for a walk in the Hermitage, but still felt lovely and summery thanks to my gorgeous new vintage floral crown – a recent bargain find from Judy’s Vintage Fair for just £5. I could have bought the seller’s entire hat stash, she had a huge box filled with them! I wonder the stories they could tell…

My mint leather bag is another favourite recent thrifty find from a charity shop in St Andrews and cost less than a cup of coffee. I forgot how amazing the charity and vintage shops are there and came away with a fair few bargains from our recent visit I’ll be sure to share soon, including a vintage Laura Ashley table cloth, two miniature cameos and the most beautiful Liberty London polka dot dress.

I absolutely love that dress, it’s so you! Loving the entire outfit. Also I bought a flower crown recently while in London but despite looking at millions of photos on Pinterest I could not figure out how to wear it… thank you for the inspiration! xx
