Do you ever find yourself dressing – subconsciously or otherwise – based on books you’ve been reading or media you’ve been consuming? I’ve written before about my penchant for Katie Morag’s style (as well as that of many other characters in children’s literature) and, more recently, found myself channeling Doctor Zhivago in snowy Edinburgh. The latest cultural phenomenon that I’ve found inspiring my wardrobe is Netflix original series The Crown. I know, I know – better late than never! I’ve always been drawn to feminine ‘fifties style silhouettes and so it was only a matter of time before Elizabeth II-inspired shapes filled my subconscious and made their way into my day-to-day wardrobe.

Her Majesty’s mid-century uniform of smart tailored dresses, nipped in at the waist and flowing full skirts are my kind of power dressing. When it comes to workwear, I want to feel and look myself while still channeling sartorial authority. In my opinion, Boden’s workwear is the best out there – and long before I started working with them I would save up for key pieces in the sale, like this tartan dress that’s still going strong. When asked to pick something from their workwear capsule collection, I was immediately drawn to the Harley dress in a Queen-worthy emerald hue. With its modest midi cut, elbow-length sleeves, clever concealed pockets and soft textured jersey it ticked all the boxes for practicality too. Dangerously, it comes in two other colours as well…

The Queen always wears bright colour to stand out in a crowd, so I’d like to think she would approve of the highlighter pink Sylvia jacket as well (plus pockets again – woohoo!). And just glimpse that spotty lining – it’s the little things. Together with the vivid green, this ensemble is enough to brighten the greyest of February days. Classic ballerina pumps never go out of style and this navy and pink pair work just as well with a tailored dress as they do a pair of dungarees at the weekend. My kind of hard-working pieces. Now if only I had a matching umbrella like the Queen for each of my outfits too…
