I’m having a bit of a thing for hats at the moment, can you tell? There’s something about the simple addition of a hat that can really make an outfit. For instance, this basic outfit of (old) oversized slouchy knit and leather panel leggings is given a new lease of life with the simple addition of a hat and a slick of red lipstick (Mac Russian Red – my new favourite). I felt this outfit could do with a different texture added to the mix, so I donned this fur Cossack hat from Topshop. I love the contrast between wool and (faux) fur and the complementary colour pallet of neutral tones makes for a subtly chic daytime look.
The Cossacks’ distinctive uniform evolved from extreme weather conditions, and their practical hats were a source of inspiration for the world of fashion in the ’60s. Now rendered in the latest (realistic) faux furs rather than the real thing, the hat is less arctic winter, more street style. There’s something about the militaristic edge that combines well with softer styling.
